Homeowner Tip

What is a timeless home?

Year in and year out, homebuyers are drawn to traditional architectural home styles. These are often related to the homes which they grew up around and may have lived in during their early years. These houses have intrinsic value to their owners. This value comes from the memories and feelings to which they strive to connect, whether consciously or unconsciously.

A timeless home is one which, once built and aged for a few years, will not be identifiable with the given period or decade when it was actually built. Even though a timeless home may look newer than other historic homes, it has accurate and properly installed materials and architectural details, which make it appear similar to the actual historic homes. By careful attention to these details by the craftsmen who build it, the home takes on the visual appeal and character which makes those historic homes attractive.

A timeless home is one which produces an emotional connection with its owners. This connection typically involves feelings of invitation, warmth, comfort and security.

The homeowner has the possibility of buying a traditional, historic home to get the original details, but may involve a significant amount of renovation work. The timeless home provides the authentic look and feeling of the historic home, but also includes the latest features, products and technology.

General steps to build a timeless home:

  • Find the right place that will be established and welcoming
  • Design a home that belongs in that specific location
  • The design should have layers of depth (details, scale, materials, colors, light and shadow) taken from traditional homes of the same or similar areas
  • Assemble a team of craftsmen who appreciate the details which make the home feel timeless
  • Pay attention to the small details (Millwork, flooring, doors & windows, color combinations, etc.)
