Homeowner Tip

Not 80%, but 100% Design!

Written by Design Build SWLA

Design is an intricate process to be celebrated and enjoyed upon completion. However, following through to your imagined vision often ends at … “to be continued”. Several obstacles can cause your design to fall short of hitting the mark. Often, the budget is mismanaged which can handicap both the functionality and desired aesthetic. Therefore, your project instead cultivates a lesser version of the original, distinct design. Having a budget disclosed, funds available and all expenses involving material and labor, quoted with approval before project initiates, is the ideal situation.

Time is also a valuable commodity, and when it is exhausted, it can quickly lead to decision fatigue. A homeowner experiencing decision fatigue may convince themselves their progress is presentable and looks better than it actually does, simply because they are “burned out”. However, the most unfortunate obstacle is having your confidence shaken by another person’s questions and opinions. The thoughts of others are very valuable, but you must also have confidence in your vision, or you run the risk of your work being split between competing ideas. This is why clear, constructive discussion between you and those involved before the project begins is crucial.

Keep in mind construction or renovation is always an investment of time, money, emotions and possible future returns. The process is not linear and requires all involved to be flexible, gracious and to stay focused. We all have a friend who has personally experienced being left with years of regret knowing how their dream project was meant to look but lacked the endurance to follow through. Engage the right professionals from the initial stage so you don’t pour money into not doing it “right” or become paralyzed by the relatable 80% plague which challenges your unique design from being fulfilled. Their experience can help streamline the process, keeping the project focused so the significant design moments are 100% achieved. The last 20% of the project is often what provides an interior with its vital aesthetic cohesiveness, imagination and a feeling of fulfillment. Plan ahead, work smart and have the home or room you love!
