Ready to pick out new countertops? We’ve got just the information that you need to know exactly what is best for you and your home.

Whether you are updating your countertops or designing from scratch, your choice of counter can be the thing that pulls all of the aspects of your room together. The four types of counters we see the most of are: quartz, marble, granite and quartzite. All of these are natural stones except for quartz. Quartz is man made and the other stone options are mined and processed into slabs.

Quartz is an engineered stone. It is made from 10% synthetic and 90% natural stone like materials. One thing to remember in keeping your quartz in perfect condition is that it is heat sensitive. Heat can discolor or change the luster in the stone. Being a man-made stone, the variations in color and options are vast. True, bright white quartz counters are incredibly popular right now. These counters are non-porous and never need to be sealed. Quartz is incredibly resistant to spills and staining. It is also highly durable and scratch resistant. For the low maintenance fan, this is a favorite.

Granite is a surprisingly durable stone. It is heat resistant and this makes it a great option for any busy kitchen. It’s also scratch resistant but does have some regular maintenance that will go along with upkeep. Since granite is porous, sealing your counters every other year will help prevent them from absorbing liquids and staining. If you want to keep up the stone’s natural luster, oiling the counters from time to time will keep them looking brand new. Granite is a great option for anyone looking for a lot of color and movement in their stone. The patterns tend to be busy and are one of a kind.

Marble is a great option for someone who wants a luxurious looking stone that makes a statement. Its hues range from bold and dramatic to subtle and delicate. Marble has a softer look. However, it is a softer stone, so it is more prone to scratching. To better hide scratches, a lot of people will choose a honed or matte finish for their counters. Even with a honed finish, these counters can sparkle. This stone is also not heat resistant. Be sure to have trivets for hot items to prevent discoloration. Just like granite, marble will need to be sealed from time to time to prevent water marks and staining.

Quartzite is the choice for you if you want a stunning natural stone that is low maintenance. It is the most durable of the natural stone options. It’s harder than granite, making it resistant to stains, scratches and etching. Heat resistant and even durable against harsh chemicals. It has beautiful veining that can make a statement in any room. The colors can range from off white and muted to bold and heavy veining throughout.
